After saving England from invasion by the Spanish Armada in 1588,
Lord Howard of Effingham lavished a fortune on tapestries celebrating the victory. For two centuries they adorned the House of Lords before perishing in 1834. Despite Prince Albert’s plans to recreate them as paintings, it was 2010 before the scheme was realised.
